How to Start a Private Label Cat Litter Brand with an Indian Manufacturer

How to Start a Private Label Cat Litter Brand with an Indian Manufacturer

A private label cat litter brand starts with a sample, a few decisions about litter, scent and bag, and a first order of at least 25 tonnes made in a factory and packed under your name. It is a sound way to own your margin and your brand, but it is not a small bet. The minimum order is a real commitment, and shipping, marketing and distribution costs sit on your side. Production takes 10 to 15 days after you confirm the order, so most of the real work is testing the sample properly and planning how you will sell the first container.

Why do brands choose private label cat litter?

Brands choose private label cat litter to control their margin, put their own name on the shelf, and buy from one factory with steady supply instead of from whoever has stock this month.

When you resell another company’s brand, that company sets your buying terms and can sell to the shop next door. With your own brand, you set the shelf price and you own the customer relationship. A factory that makes the same litter to the same specification each time also gives shoppers something they notice: a bag that behaves the same way in the litter box every month.

The catch is that a brand does not sell itself. You need enough volume to justify the minimum order, and you need to spend time and money getting the first bags into homes. Private label takes the factory off your plate. It does not take the marketing off it.

Common mistake: Treating private label as a way to skip the hard part of selling. The factory makes the litter. Finding shops, cat owners and repeat buyers is still your job, and it should be planned before the order, not after.

What does the journey of a first order look like?

A first order moves through seven steps: brief, sample, approval, order confirmation, production, loading and shipping. Here is how they fit together for an imagined buyer, a pet retailer who wants to launch a 10 kg litter under her own name.

She starts with a brief, a short message saying which litter form she wants, which scent, which pack size and which markets she plans to sell in. A page of notes is enough. It lets the factory say honestly what fits and what does not.

Next comes the sample, where the idea becomes something she can hold. She tests it on the kitchen floor and then with real cats, as described below. Approval is the moment she says yes to one specific litter and, ideally, to the bag artwork as well.

Order confirmation follows. Quantity, pack, scent, bag design and terms are agreed in writing, and production is booked. The 10 to 15 day production clock starts here.

During production, the litter is made and filled into her printed bags. At loading, the container is filled at our factory in Mandvi, Gujarat, under our team’s supervision, so someone who knows the product watches the bags go in. The paperwork travels with the goods: a batch COA (certificate of analysis, the lab report for that production batch), a safety data sheet and a packing list.

The last step is shipping. The container goes to the port, and she handles freight, insurance and import clearance in her own country. First-time buyers often underestimate this step, so talk to a freight forwarder before you order, not after.

What can you customize?

You can customize the litter form, scent, pack size, bag type and printing. The table shows what we offer for each.

Option What we offer Worth knowing
Litter form Ball-shaped (2 to 5 mm) or granular (0.5 to 3.0 mm), both sodium bentonite Both clump; the choice is mostly about your market
Scent Lavender, baby powder, coffee, or a scent you specify Ask local retailers before committing a full order to one scent
Pack size 5 kg or 10 kg, or a size you specify Choose what your shelves and shoppers can handle
Bag type Single or double laminated, or a type you specify A double laminated bag is generally more durable; ask which suits your route
Printing Digitally printed from your artwork Send final, print-ready files and check you hold the rights

The finished litter comes in tan, off-white or beige, so choose your bag colors with that in mind. Bag text, claims and symbols are regulated differently in each country, so check your own market’s labelling requirements before the artwork is final.

How do you choose the litter itself?

Most buyers choose between ball-shaped and granular sodium bentonite, then decide on scent. Sodium bentonite is a clay that swells when wet and binds into a firm clump you can scoop out, which is why it is the base for clumping litter.

Ball-shaped litter is made of rounded pieces, while granular litter is finer and looks more traditional. Neither is simply better; it depends on what your shoppers are used to. Our ball-shaped vs granular bentonite cat litter post compares them in detail, and sodium vs calcium bentonite cat litter explains the clay itself.

Scent is a market decision. Some owners like a light fragrance and others avoid it completely, so find out what your shoppers prefer before you commit 25 tons.

How should you test samples?

Test a sample in two rounds: a quick check of clumping, dust, scooping, odour and tracking at your desk, then a trial with real cats and real owners. The desk checks tell you whether the litter is worth a trial. The trial tells you whether it will sell.

  • Clumping: wet a spoonful. The clump should hold together and lift out in one piece without crumbling.
  • Dust: pour from knee height into an empty tray and watch the air. All litter makes some dust, so the question is how much and how fast it settles.
  • Scooping: scoop a day later. The clump should leave little loose litter stuck to it.
  • Odour: check used litter after 24 hours, and smell the unused scented litter on its own. A scent that is too sharp in the bag may put owners off.
  • Tracking: look at how many granules end up outside the box and on the floor.
  • Real trial: give the litter to several cat-owning households for a couple of weeks and ask the owners, not just yourself, about acceptance, scooping and smell.

Ask for the batch COA with your sample and read it. Our finished litter has moisture brought down to about 12%, which is the water left in the clay and affects bag weight and storage. Bulk density is 0.90 to 1.10 g/cm³, meaning a litre weighs roughly 0.9 to 1.1 kg, so the litter may look thicker or thinner in the box depending on form. We also run a clump drop test in-house, which broadly means dropping a wet clump to see whether it holds together.

Common mistake: Approving a sample after testing it on one cat in one home. Cats are individuals. A wider trial costs you a few weeks and can save a full container.

What should you expect on quantity, lead time and terms?

Expect a minimum order of 25 tonnes, 10 to 15 days of production after order confirmation, and FOB pricing only. We do not quote CIF.

FOB means “free on board”: our price covers the goods until they are loaded onto your ship at the Indian port, and from there freight, insurance, import duties and delivery are yours.

Twenty-five tonnes is a real commitment. Besides the order itself, you need storage, cash for freight and clearance, and a sales plan for the litter. How many containers 25 tonnes fills depends on the pack type, and we confirm this in the quote. The 10 to 15 days start when the order is confirmed, not at your first email, and they do not include sea freight.

Shipping documents are a batch COA, a safety data sheet and a packing list. Import rules, duties and labelling requirements differ by country, so check what your own customs authority and importer need before you order.

How do you judge a manufacturer?

Judge a manufacturer by asking the same questions of everyone and watching whether the answers are specific, written and easy to check.

Question to ask What a good answer looks like
Do you make the litter yourself? They own the plant, describe the process, and welcome a video call or visit
What is your minimum order, and how many containers is it? A clear tonnage and container count, in writing
Which documents ship with each order? Named documents, such as a batch COA, safety data sheet and packing list, with an explanation of each
How do you check each batch? Named tests, like moisture and clumping, with results for your batch
Who supervises container loading? A named team and photos or video of the loading
Which price terms do you quote? One clearly stated term (FOB or CIF), with no vague extras

What mistakes do first-time buyers make?

Most first-order problems come from skipping a step, not from the factory.

Ordering before testing widely. A few weeks of trials is cheap compared with a full container.

Leaving the bag design until last. Artwork, labelling text and print files take time. Start them while the sample is being tested.

Counting only the factory price. Freight, insurance, import duties, storage and marketing all land on the buyer. Work these out before confirming the order.

Having no plan for selling 25 tonnes. Know who your first shops, distributors or online channels are before the litter ships.

Where to go from here

If you are weighing a first order, the simplest next step is a sample. Tell us your market, your preferred litter form and your pack size, test what arrives, and decide from there. If it is not the right fit, you will have lost a few weeks, not a container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a registered trademark before I start?

Not to request a sample. It is wise to check that your brand name is free to use and protect in your market before bags are printed, and a trademark adviser in your country can help. We print the artwork you supply, so make sure you hold the rights to it.

Can I use the same bag in more than one country?

Sometimes, but labelling rules, languages and required symbols differ by country. Check each market’s requirements before the artwork is final, and tell us early if you need different versions.

Who handles import duties and permits?

You do. Because we quote FOB, everything after loading at the port is on the buyer’s side, including freight, insurance, duties and permits. Your clearing agent can tell you what your market requires.

Should my first order be simple?

Many first-time buyers keep it simple, with one litter form, one scent and one pack size, because the first sales are easier to read. Ask us whether mixing options within one order is possible.
